NEW JERSEY HALL OF FAME
CLASS OF 2010 ANNOUNCED
BY GOVERNOR-ELECT
CHRIS CHRISTIE
Gala Induction Ceremony Slated for
May 2nd at NJPAC in Newark
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (December 3, 2009) – Challenging young people to pursue their dreams, the New Jersey Hall of Fame announced the newest class of inductees with legends and luminaries ranging from jazz great Count Basie to President Woodrow Wilson.
Governor-elect Chris Christie unveiled 15 inductees to the New Jersey Hall of Fame, an impressive list which included music legend and inventor Les Paul, feminist Alice Paul, architect Michael Graves and baseball pioneer Larry Doby. The list included movie stars Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon and Danny DeVito, novelists Judy Blume and Phillip Roth and track and field superstar Carl Lewis.
In addition to Roth, Newark boasted two other Hall of Famers: music legend Frankie Valli and Supreme Court Justice William Brennan. Rounding out the list was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts Oradell resident Wally Schirra.
"As with our first two classes of inductees, this roster of New Jersey Hall of Fame inductees is extraordinary," said Bart Oates, chairman of the NJHOF Board of Commissioners. "The people of our state should be proud of these individuals who have attained remarkable success by following their dreams. We hope that the Hall of Fame not only serves as an inspiration for young people but challenges them to pursue their dreams and become the best they can."
The Class of 2010 will be inducted at a gala red carpet ceremony on Sunday, May 2nd at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Tickets will not go on sale to the general public until the spring, but are available now to sponsors and donors. More information can be found on the website at www.NJHallofFame.org.
In addition to introducing the Class of 2010, Hall of Fame officials also unveiled the site of their first regional museum, the Auditorium Building of the State Museum in Trenton. Up to now, the Hall of Fame has been a virtual museum, but is now moving forward to open the first major exhibit within the next 12 to 18 months.
“The State Museum is an appropriate site for the first of four regional locations around the state,” explained Don Jay Smith, Executive Director. “We are also exploring options in Newark, Atlantic City and Asbury Park for the future so that the stories of all of our remarkable inductees can be easily accessible to everyone in the state.”
Smith also outlined future plans for a Mobile Museum which will take exhibits to schools and communities around the state and several Walls of Fame, projects which will be completed as the funds are raised.
The New Jersey Education Association and the consulting and accounting firm J.H. Cohn, LLP have taken the lead in providing support in the establishment of the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Additional sponsors include Comcast, Cablevision, PNC Bank, Continental Airlines, Edison Innovation Foundation, NJN, GEM Limousine, Hilton Short Hills, Advanced Parking Concepts, PSE&G, Verizon, Horizon, Group One Investments, Gellman Images, Lacy’s Express and National Retail Systems. NEW JERSEY HALL OF FAME
ANNOUNCES 30 NOMINEES
FOR CLASS OF 2010
Public vote to run through November 20th
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (September 15, 2009) – Music legends, presidents, sports heroes, writers and a chef comprise some of the 30 great New Jerseyans nominated for the third class of the New Jersey Hall of Fame. In a press conference held at Giants Stadium, the New Jersey Hall of Fame introduced nominees in the categories of Historical, Arts & Entertainment, Sports, Enterprise and General, drawing from all parts of the state and from as far back as the Revolutionary War to the present.
In the Historical Category, inventor and music great Les Paul is joined by President Grover Cleveland, Admiral William Halsey, Founding Father Thomas Paine, suffrage leader Alice Paul and President Woodrow Wilson. This category is for deceased Jerseyans whose accomplishments transcend any particular category.
The Arts & Entertainment Category is filled with household names including jazz great Count Basie, actor Danny DeVito, actor Jack Nicholson, actress Susan Sarandon, singer Frankie Valli and Motown star Stevie Wonder.
The Enterprise Category includes scientists, business leaders, inventors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and leaders in medicine. This year’s nominees feature architect Michael Graves, financial feminist Mary Roebling, television pioneer David Sarnoff, astronaut Wally Schirra, Fed Chairman Paul Volker and chef Alice Waters.
New Jersey has long been home to great sports figures and in that category the nominees include baseball pioneer Larry Doby, basketball star Anne Donovan, Jets owner and businessman Leon Hess, track legend Carl Lewis, Giants’ owner Wellington Mara and football star Joe Theismann.
The largest category, General, is a catchall that includes educators, writers, poets, military leaders, scholars and more. The nominees this year include novelists Philip Roth and Judy Blume, philanthropist Doris Duke, Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, cartoonist Thomas Nast and economist Milton Friedman.
“This impressive list of nominees proves once again that New Jersey is fertile ground for nurturing talent,” said Don Jay Smith, executive director of the Hall of Fame. “As people study the candidates and decide how to vote, they will be learning about great role models for us all.”
The annual Hall of Fame nomination process begins in early summer when a panel of experts, comprised of university professors, scientists, editors, authors and other authorities, reviews and evaluates a list of more than 200 potential Hall of Famers. That list, compiled from nominations made by the public and the experts, is trimmed to the top 125 and presented to the Voting Academy, which is the voting steering committee for the Hall of Fame. The Voting Academy is made up of approximately 100 of the state’s most prominent organizations as well as former Governors. The Voting Academy then votes to determine the top six nominees in each category.
"As with our first two classes of nominees, this assemblage of New Jersey Hall of Fame nominees is indeed impressive," said Bart Oates, chairman of the NJHOF Board of Commissioners. "The people of our state should be proud of these individuals who have attained remarkable success. We hope that the Hall of Fame inspires young people to strive to be the best they can."
Now through November 20, everyone can vote on-line at the Hall of Fame website which is www.NJHallofFame.org. Teachers in many schools around the state are using an interdisciplinary instructional unit, created by a panel of teachers under the leadership of the NJEA to teach students about New Jersey history and the voting process using the NJHOF vote as the cornerstone of their lessons.
“Not only is the NJ Hall of Fame a valuable way to teach students about New Jersey history,” said Steve Edwards of the Hall of Fame Foundation Board of Trustees and Executive Producer of the annual Induction Ceremony, “it is a great way to develop other important lessons such as research, decision making and persuasive skills through the process of voting. That’s why education is such an important part of our efforts.”
Although supported only by private funds, the Hall of Fame is operating under the auspices of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA). The museum is overseen by a Hall of Fame Advisory Commission, led by Chairman Bart Oates. The other members of the Commission include Randy Beverly, Marie Blistan, Rick Cerone, Herb Gilsenberg, Carl Goldberg, Ronnie Goldberg, Bill Kettleson, Virginia Littell, John O’Brien, Dennis Robinson and Cesar Shapiama.
While the New Jersey Hall of Fame still exists only on the web, plans are in place to create a mobile museum which will take exhibits to schools and communities around the state. In addition, the Hall of Fame will be regionally located in Trenton, Newark, Asbury Park and Atlantic City.
“With the construction of a mobile museum, we will be able to take the Hall of Fame to the people of New Jersey,” explained Oates. “Families can easily pay a visit either to the trailer when it comes to their area or to one of our regional sites not only to teach their children about New Jersey history, but also to inspire them to excel.”
Both the New Jersey Education Association and the consulting and accounting firm J.H. Cohn, LLP have taken the lead in providing support in the establishment of the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
The public can vote for their selections to The New Jersey Hall of Fame on-line at NJHallofFame.org. The winners will be announced later in the fall.
